Greed vs Choso (Fullmetal Alchemist vs Jujutsu Kaisen)

“Our mortality makes it impossible for our problems to last forever.” - Mokokoma Mokhonoana

Greed, deserter of the seven sins.

Choso, the oldest of twelve cursed siblings.

What does it mean to be human? Are those who aren’t born such forced to live a life of cruelty, or do they just need some good people and a couple of forced memories to help push them? These two incarnated warriors know of the journey to humanity all too well, but they’ve left their inhuman sides behind, changing their ways to help guide the path for those they care for, no matter the cost. So when push comes to shove, which of these two can carve out a path to victory? Will Greed’s avarice be enough to take it, or will Choso make his opponent curse the day they crossed paths? Let’s find out who would win a DEATH BATTLE!

Before We Start…

For this, we’ll be taking into consideration the standard stuff you’ve come to expect from these franchises in VS debates: anime, manga and tertiary sources like the 2003 anime, guidebooks and mobile game will be covered for Greed, and the original manga, anime and guidebooks will be discussed for Choso.

Also, given that this features a character from a series still ongoing, this is your spoiler warning for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga (and the Fullmetal Alchemist series, to a lesser extent).

Also also, insanely huge thanks to Cabbage (who helped with this) for her Choso blog, which, while slightly outdated due to recent chapters, was a big help for Choso’s side. This was also made with the help of several other Fullmetal Alchemist/Jujutsu Kaisen-related blogs and sources, which we’ll list off right now:

Background

Greed

“You humans think greed is just for money and power! But everyone wants something they don't have.”

On the surface, the country of Amestris seemed to have been a prosperous state protected by the finest Alchemists around. However, a dark and sinister plot was brewing behind the scenes, spearheaded by none other than Father, the first and the oldest of the artificially created Homunculi. His plan was to achieve godhood with the assistance of his creations; his own Homunculi in the form of physical embodiments of the seven deadly sins which he believed made humans imperfect. But while Father was able to put the other sins under his control, there was one that he couldn’t do the same with: Greed.

Greed, as his name implies, wanted all the luxuries life had to offer, and helping Father fulfill his plan wouldn’t help achieve that goal, so he disbanded from the group and went off on his own. Along with his goal for endless wealth, Greed also sought out immortality, and found an opportunity to achieve that upon meeting Alphonse Elric, an independent soul bound to a suit of armor. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t work out quite as he wanted, and found himself forcibly brought back to Father by the Homunculi in disguise, Wrath.

After being melted down into a Philosopher's Stone, Father sought a new function for Greed after the death of Lust, extracting Greed’s avarice and inserting it into the prince of Xing, Ling Yao. He manages to take over his body, temporarily wiping his memories of his previous life, now (mostly) back under the control of Father. However, it turned out that Ling was still somewhere deep within Greed, waiting for a moment of weakness to take back his body, and managed to find that moment when Greed killed one of his former gang members, the memories of his past life flooding back into him as he began feeling guilt and regret over killing someone close enough to be considered family.

Greed and Ling would constantly fight over control over their bodies, but they ultimately had the common goal to stop Father from achieving godlike power, joining forces with Edward Elric in his mission. The two proved to be instrumental in the Homunculi’s defeat, able to work together to make up for each other’s weaknesses, oddly growing a stronger bond throughout the final battle for the fate of Amestris. Ultimately however, after having his soul stolen from Father, Greed made the ultimate sacrifice by allowing himself to be captured, using his Ultimate Shield to severely weaken his creator, before his essence is ejected and severed, slowly dying without a proper vessel.

In his final moments before fading into nothingness, Greed looked on at Ed and Ling shedding tears for his death, realizing what he was looking for all this time and that he had it all along: not fortune or earthly possessions, but true friendship and comradery. After the eventual defeat of Father by the hands of Edward Elric, Ling would go on to become the new emperor of Xing many years later, but the memories of his enemy-turned-ally still weigh on his conscience. He ultimately achieved what he and Greed so desperately wanted all along: everything, and so much more.

Choso

“Why? Why at that time… Why…Did I…choose the easy path?”

Long ago during the Meiji Era, an unnamed woman had a half-human half-cursed baby, an anomaly that caused her to be ostracized by her family. However, a mysterious man by the name of Noritoshi Kamo decided to use her strange physiology for his own gain, forcing her to bear children for his own twisted curiosity. Nine children were born and nine others were aborted, the survivors being known as the Death Painting Wombs. Tokyo Jujutsu High eventually found the wombs and sealed them within their walls, isolated for over 150 years. However, a villainous group of Curses known as the Disaster Curses would invade the school one day with the goal of obtaining Sukuna’s fingers and the Death Paintings. Upon retrieval, the Death Paintings were free once more, and among those free from 150 years of isolation was Choso.

Alongside his brothers Kechizu and Eso, Choso aligned himself with the likes of Mahito and Kenjaku, believing that it will lead to the future they envisioned. However, Choso’s brothers would soon meet a tragic end by sorcerers Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki, the remaining Death Painting feeling devastated after their untimely demise. From there, Choso swore to avenge them by killing those responsible, and saw an opportunity during the infamous Shibuya Incident to do so. After assisting in sealing Satoru Gojo in the Prison Realm, Choso went off on his own to find his brother’s killer, and without hesitation, sprung into battle with Yuji at first sight.

It was a hard-fought battle in the Shibuya subway, but Choso managed to come out on top against Sukuna’s vessel, leaving him on the brink of death. However, memories suddenly came flooding into Choso’s conscious that never happened of him, Yuji and his brothers happily eating together… like a family. Choso then came to a bewildering conclusion that Yuji Itadori was his brother, and eventually learned of Kenjaku’s past life as Noritoshi Kamo. No longer aligning with the Disaster Curses, Choso did everything in his power to protect his remaining brother, but despite his best efforts along with the other Sorcerers, Kenjaku was able to escape once more and continue his plans.

From there, Choso would do everything to protect Yuji following the Shibuya Incident, as his brother was set to be executed as ordered by the jujutsu higher-ups, while still pursuing Kenjaku at all costs. He wanted nothing more than to make him suffer for the pain he inflicted upon his mother, even if it meant giving up his own life. When questioned about this, Choso explained that he and his brothers chose to live as Curses due to their fear of not being accepted by society, yet believed that if he had chosen to live as humans, then he could’ve prevented their deaths. Choso believed that he had no right to live alongside Yuji, but Yuki Tsukumo assured him that if he were gone, Yuji would be all alone once more. And before sacrificing herself for him, she told Choso that he was now dead as a Curse, and to live on as a human.

While distraught over her death, Choso did his best to carry out Yuki’s wishes, assisting the Jujutsu Sorcerers in defeating the King of Curses once and for all. He did all he could against Sukuna, but after a devastating and fatal attack, Choso used all he had to protect Yuji from the flames. Choso makes peace with his eventual demise, but not before Yuji expresses gratitude to Choso for standing by him during the hard times when he needed him most. Choso returns the favor by thanking Yuji for being his little brother one last time, ultimately succumbing to Sukuna’s flames, all for the sake of his remaining family. There’s no doubt that his siblings would be proud of everything Choso has done.

Experience & Skill

Greed

Being over 200 years old, Greed has seen quite a bit of action in his lifetime. Even in his first appearance, he was shown capable of scrapping with Edward, a highly skilled alchemist and hand-to-hand fighter in his own right. Greed is also extremely proficient in his use of the Ultimate Shield, knowing when to use it offensively, defensively or in tandem with one another.

On the other hand, Ling is a highly skilled combatant, being an expert in the Xingese style of martial arts. He is more notably an expert in swordplay, even being able to do fairly well against the likes of King Bradley, who is one of the most skilled combatants in the series thanks to his intense military training and experience in combat for over 40 years. Ling is also extremely crafty and a natural leader, able to come up with strategies on the fly to better get a few steps ahead of his opponent, and knows when to let Greed take control to take advantage of his abilities.

Choso

You’d think that being locked in a jar for over 100 years would mean not much to do, but Choso is surprisingly no slouch when it comes to a fight. Despite admitting to having no combat experience, he was able to contend with the likes of Yuji Itadori, one of the most talented and skilled students in the Jujutsu High, and Kenjaku, a 1000 year-old sorcerer.

Additionally, despite being in that incubator for all that time, Choso used it to hone his Blood Manipulation, becoming a master at it. He’s shown to be incredibly effective in his use of the technique and can be quite creative with its uses, like setting up Supernovas in advance against Yuji, or tricking Naoya into thinking he’ll do one attack when he really uses another. He’s even good enough at Blood Manipulation to teach Yuji how to do it as well. Alongside all this, Choso can adapt to a fight quite well, still being able to keep a level head against Yuji even after he exploited his weakness to water.

Equipment

Greed

Sword

While not utilized as much later in the series, Ling wielded a Dao Sword, a Chinese broadsword with a wide blade and a curve in the middle, allowing for better cutting and thrusting movements in battle.

Grenades

Ling and his followers were also known to carry around explosives. These include the standard grenades, smoke grenades, flashbangs, tear gas, and flares.

Choso

Nothing

Choso has no notable equipment. He do be kinda drippy tho

Abilities

Greed

Homunculus Physiology

The Homunculi are artificially created humans brought into existence through Alchemy, but have a few key differences to normal humans. The biggest and most obvious one being physical superiority to any human alive in terms of strength and agility, and they also do not age with the exception of Wrath. Most notably, however, the main source of power for a Homunculus is their Philosopher’s Stone, which was injected into their body upon creation, acting like a battery for their terrifying power. Along with being essentially superhuman thanks to these stones, Homunculi all come with unique abilities. A shared one including…

Regeneration

All Homunculi, and thus Greed as well, are incredibly difficult to put down for good due to their ability to regenerate from just about any injury sustained. Whether it’s having their limbs severed, being blown to smithereens, or even having their heads destroyed as seen with Greed himself, with the power of their Philosopher’s Stones and as long as there’s some semblance of their bodies intact, they can heal their bodies as good as new. The Homunculi can even regenerate from the stone itself, like when Lust was reduced to ashes by Roy Mustang, but proceeded to regenerate with her stone from the blood it had on it.

However, this healing factor is purely reliant on the aforementioned stone, and can only work so long as the stone has enough souls, and can be overtaxed or even destroyed, thus negating a Homunculus’ regeneration.

Ultimate Shield

Each of the Homunculi come with their own unique ability that represents their respective Sin. For Greed, it was known as the Ultimate Shield. With this, Greed has control over the carbon atoms in his body, allowing him to make his skin as strong as the hardest diamonds imaginable. He primarily covers his skin in a hard-yet-flexible material that heavily increases his physical capabilities along with his defense, as the name should imply. Additionally, even when he hardens his whole body, it does not hinder his overall movement, able to move around just as fast as he normally would, even being able to avoid gunfire while in his fully armored state. Along with his skin, Greed can use his carbon manipulation to create makeshift claws and blades.

While Greed’s shield is mostly impenetrable, it is not without its downsides. Because it’s made up of a material that can be manipulated by Alchemy, it can be manipulated by those proficient in the art, like when Edward Elric figured out the makeup of the shield and proceeded to affect it with alchemy. The other big weakness is that he cannot harden his skin and regenerate simultaneously, and opponents in the past have exploited this weakness.

Dragon’s Pulse

In the land of Xing, it is believed that a flow of life energy flows within the Earth and those who inhabit it, known as Dragon’s Pulse. This essentially acts as a sixth sense, allowing its user to be more aware of their surroundings than normal, and as seen in the example above, can even help its user detect people unable to be seen. Dragon’s Pulse can also be a help in sensing spiritual anomalies, like the energy of the Philosopher's Stones’ spiritual nature within the Homunculi, seen when Lan Fan detected Envy disguised as a dog.

Choso

Cursed Energy Manipulation

Cursed Energy is a form of energy utilized by sorcerers to enhance their power, typically generated through negative emotions like sadness and anger, flowing from the gut to the rest of the body. While most humans have some semblance of Cursed Energy due to negative emotions being quite common in everyone, skilled sorcerers are able to generate high amounts of it and use it from even the slightest of emotions. It’s capable of increasing its users strength, shielding them from attacks by focusing their energy, and is even capable of protecting one’s soul from being tampered with.

Blood Manipulation

Blood Manipulation is a technique passed down from the Kamo Clan for generations that Choso inherited from possessing Kamo Noritoshi’s blood, and has been practicing it for over 150 years while dormant within Jujutsu High.

As the name suggests, Blood Manipulation involves the manipulation of the user’s own blood, including its temperature, pulse rate, and number of blood cells along with anything it interacts with. The blood’s effectiveness is further amplified via halting the blood’s coagulation at the cost of being more susceptible to dissolving. Blood Manipulation is a highly valued technique for its balance in all ranges of combat.

While techniques will be touched on in a bit, Choso’s adapted Blood Manipulation in many ways. He’s fired bursts of blood to either fuel techniques or push away foes, or to hold foes stained by his blood down, carve out and launch terrain, make barriers, telekinetically direct blood to foes or back from being fired as a barrage and even shoot his own hand for a surprise attack. Choso’s shown great flexibility with the technique, be it changing his strategy on the fly or shifting between different techniques altogether.

Choso can even enhance his own body by hardening the blood within, such as making a gauntlet for offense or blocking part of his stomach for defense. While hardened, Choso’s shown to fire out blasts of blood, either small items for feigns or blasts strong enough that it tore Yuji’s shoulder and eye. However, this application of the technique comes at a dangerous risk of the user immediately developing thrombosis, so this would only be used if the risk warrants it.

Death Painting Womb Physiology

The Death Paintings were an experiment orchestrated by Noritoshi Kamo, the most evil sorcerer in history. While all remaining information on their mother was destroyed, she possessed a special genetic makeup that gave birth to a cursed spirit child, which possessed both human and cursed spirit blood. She would later encounter Noritoshi Kamo after running from her people to the mountains, and give birth to the twelve Death Paintings.

Three of the twelve Death Paintings would be brought back by Mahito feeding their respective Cursed Objects to three civilians. Vessels for Death Paintings can be anybody, including those with no potential. Once their transformation is complete, they have no resemblance to their vessel’s original appearance, though how drastic their transformation is can be influenced by the resilience of the vessel. No matter who brought them back however, Death Paintings live for themselves and their brothers first and foremost as their way of life.

As their blood is a combination of curse spirit and human, this presents many benefits for their Blood Manipulation capabilities. These include:

Slicing Exorcism

Slicing Exorcism is the most simple of Choso’s techniques, creating incredibly fast streams of blood in front of him that can tear through foes. Slicing Exorcism can also be used in a Chakram variation, where it creates one spinning at high speeds and Choso can create multiple at once to fire when ready. Naoya notes that blood loss slows down this variation, but this is likely incorrect as Choso’s unaffected by blood loss as brought up prior, and was likely just setting him up for a Piercing Blood snipe.

Blood Meteorite

If Choso chooses, he’s able to imbue and compress his blood to its very limit, which creates a rock-like projectile he can launch at high speeds. However, this move lacks the speed and power Piercing Blood does, and Choso’s mentions that it wouldn’t have gone through Yuji’s liver if it wasn’t a surprise attack, making it more of a desperation move. This is not to be confused with Convergence, due to hardening not being used for Blood Manipulation.

Convergence

The bread and butter for multiple extension techniques of Blood Manipulation. Convergence is performed by compressing and condensing blood to its very limit, where Choso can expend it immediately for a technique or orbit around him for future use. The charging time means that Choso must have caution using it, otherwise being interrupted mid charge disrupts the technique. If he’s in a tough spot though, Choso can use Convergence for a quick blood-coating punch.

Piercing Blood

By charging Convergence and clasping it between his palms, Choso can use his most well known technique and deadly: Piercing Blood. The technique fires a continuous, pointed beam reinforced with Cursed Energy towards his target. The beam’s fastest at the start and decreases in speed overtime, though it’s still strong enough to penetrate through multiple buildings from a large distance. More pressure can be applied to increase its power or speed, or fire it quickly without fully charging Convergence at the expense of being weaker. Choso demonstrated incredible skill with this technique, such as firing it from behind, faking out opponents, or even carving out the surroundings by sending a loop or firing multiple at once.

Supernova

The ol’ Choso original. As a result of honing his blood manipulation for 150 years, Choso unlocked his most powerful blood attack. Choso highly condenses blood into small orbs before letting them burst out like a grenade, sending hardened blood pellets everywhere in an explosion of blood. He can fire multiple of these orbs at once or condense them all into one large orb for maximum damage.

Blood Edge

Choso may not have any equipment, but this doesn’t mean he’s unarmed. Via rotating his blood at high speeds, Choso can create lethal weapons to use against his opponent. He’s commonly used this for daggers, but has also made claws or multiple spikes to try impaling foes with. Should Choso lose control of them, such as exposure to water, the spinning blood can explode in his face.

Flowing Red Scale

By increasing the rate at which his body pumps blood, its internal temperature, and its amount of red blood cells, Choso can greatly enhance his body's strength and speed. He can also choose in which areas the blood increases, such as enhancing his optical muscles to increase vision. He's able to stack this form as well with Flowing Red Scale: Stack, increasing the improvements to his body even further. This form is represented by the changing of his face tattoo, gaining lines through his eyes for the normal version, and gaining arrows for the stacked version.

Wing King

Following the thoughts of his brothers giving him strength (common Choso W), he’s developed his own version of Eso’s Maximum: Wing King. Choso creates a set of four wings on his back that increases his mobility for fights. It can also be used to launch multiple vectors of blood which he can give tracking properties if he wishes, at the expense of being slower than Piercing Blood. Compressed blood can be launched from the technique which can be used for multiple Supernovas at once. Eso, the original user of the technique, has used his own variation for flight and pursuit instead, which while debatable to give, Choso could theoretically replicate.

New Shadow Style: Simple Domain

In order to stand a chance against Sukuna, Choso had to learn Simple Domain. Simple Domain creates a small effectless domain around the user in order to counter the sure hit effect of a domain expansion, though against stronger domains it can only last so long. Due to Choso being forced to learn this ability quickly, he doesn’t have the same mastery with it as other users, so its other potential effects like automatic responses wouldn’t be accessible for him.

Healing/Reverse Cursed Technique

Another technique he learned in order to fight Sukuna. By multiplying negative cursed energy against itself, Choso can create positive energy that heals his body. His cursed spirit physiology helps him out here, due to his body already generating blood from cursed energy and his ability to manipulate said blood, Choso has a far easier time using the technique then other sorcerers, along with requiring far less cursed energy to do so. He’s used this to heal from two massive holes put through his chest and a black flash to his waist.

Along with Reverse Cursed Technique, Chosos blood manipulation gives him another form of healing. By connecting blood to his appendages, he can connect them back to his body if lost or use it to extend them for a ranged attack(as seen above). He used it on his arm in his fight against Kenjaku, and Yuji did it with his leg against Sukuna.

Resistances

  • Extreme Heat: Can withstand being in the presence of Jogo, who passively burns people to ashes

  • Limited Soul Manipulation: Choso’s skill in CE could be compared to Nanami, who was able to somewhat resist Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration with his Cursed Energy, which transfigures the soul.

  • Foreign Intrusions: The body is considered a living Domain, meaning that foreign intrusions cannot manifest in the body and must enter via piercing the skin or breathing it.

Scaling

Greed

The Alchemists

The main heroes and practitioners of Fullmetal Alchemist’s titular power system, many of the best Alchemists in the series have shown off some impressive feats that Greed should be comparable to, considering his run-ins with the likes of Edward, even being able to keep up with him after becoming Greeling. Him being on generally equal footing to the other Alchemists in the final battle also supports him being able to compare to the likes of Roy Mustang.

The Homunculi

While Greed didn’t do so hot in his first encounter with Bradley, he did much better in a later fight with him, and even complimented his fighting when he fought him as Ling. Additionally, he was able to fight the likes of Envy, Gluttony and Pride, so in general, Greed should be on the same level as his fellow Homunculi siblings.

Father (Debatable, see Before The Verdict)

Despite being the one who eventually killed him, an argument can be made for Greed downscaling his all powerful creator. He managed to pierce his head in the final battle, and alchemists he scales to like Alphonse could survive a powerful blast from him, albeit suffering severe damage in the process. To be clear, this would only downscale from normal Father, as Greed is in no way comparable to Father with both God and Amestris’ souls in him.

Choso

Jujutsu Sorcerers

During the Shibuya Incident, Choso was able to contend with Yuji Itadori and even come out on top in their confrontation. Thus, it should be reasonable to say that Choso could do the same and even likely do better against the other students of Jujutsu High.

Special Grade Curses

While Choso has never fought any of his fellow Curses, there’s a solid argument to be made for him being comparable in power to them. Choso fought Yuji after he had fought Mahito in the past, and it was stated that Jogo would’ve died if he took five Black Flashes from Yuji in addition to hits from Todo’s Playful Cloud, which Hanami was able to survive. Additionally, Choso did have his moments against Kenjaku and Sukuna, both of whom should easily be above these guys (more on that here in a sec), so ultimately, he should be well-within the range of their feats.

Kenjaku

Everyone’s favorite mom, Kenjaku and Choso have clashed in the past, and while the latter of the two did struggle quite a bit, he was able to push Kenjaku back quite a bit in their encounter, like when he shot him point-blank with Piercing Blood and did significant damage, or when he was forced to use his Anti-Gravity Technique to avoid Supernova. While Choso wouldn’t be fully 1-to-1 with Kenjaku, especially not with one of the feats we’re about to mention, him being able to hold his own, damage Kenjaku, and growing stronger after this encounter means that it’s safe to say he should be around Kenjaku’s league.

Sukuna (Debatable, see Before The Verdict)

Similar to Father for Greed, despite being the one who killed him, arguments can be made for Choso downscaling the King of Curses himself. He survived a Black Flash from him by hardening his blood, and was able to hold off his fire arrow with a shield of blood for a while before it eventually killed him. While he was weakened during this after taking attacks from the likes of Yuji, Maki and Yuta, most of the feats about to be mentioned Sukuna scales to while not at full strength.

Weaknesses

Greed

In spite of Greeling’s impressive capabilities in battle, he is not without a few flaws. To recap the weaknesses we covered earlier, a Homunculi’s healing factor is only reliant on their Philosopher’s Stones, and can be overtaxed as seen multiple times throughout the series. Additionally, Greed cannot use his Ultimate Shield and his regeneration at the same time, something that tactical combatants like Edward Elric can pick up on.

It should also be worth mentioning that Greeling cannot have the abilities of the two souls within themselves at the same time, the two notably having abilities that the other does not. Ling does not possess Greed’s regeneration and shield, and Greed does not have Ling’s fighting skills and Ki sensing, so the two must cooperate to make up for each other’s differences.

Choso

Despite the Death Painting’s incredible abilities, Choso’s not without his weaknesses in fights. His most powerful moves such as Piercing Blood and Supernova require time to charge up and utilize Convergence, and thus is vulnerable to being rushed down as demonstrated by Naoya when battling him. He’s also got a couple limitations on how he can use Blood Manipulation, as while his technique boosts his blood’s potency, it comes at the expense of being highly dissolvable in water. And lastly, while still being able to make large amounts, his blood usage still has the limitation of how much cursed energy he possesses just like all other Cursed Techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Before The Verdict

Does Alchemy scale to physicals?

When discussing Fullmetal Alchemist, we’ve been mentioning several feats that involve the series’ power system alchemy, but are these feats representative of how physically strong they actually are, and would Greed be comparable to that kind of strength? Well, the issue is that both Amestrian Alchemy and Xingese Alkahestry are described as drawing from the power of the Earth itself, the former being from the planet’s plates, and the latter being from Dragon’s Pulse, a flow of life energy within the Earth and all forms of life. Both versions ultimately abide by the same idea that alchemy comes from the energy of the planet, and it’s pretty much never implied that it’s something you need to be super strong to do. Alchemy being through energy rather than physicals is also supported by Father being able to essentially turn it off for Edward; if it were purely strength that dictated how alchemy is done, then he would’ve still been able to do it regardless.

You could potentially argue that because the characters have to draw the energy themselves they’d therefore scale, but that requires assuming it’s a physical procedure. It gets even trickier when you factor in the deconstruction side of Alchemy, considering that alchemists get obliterated when they’re faced with pure Deconstruction Alchemy, it's again showing they don’t have a great way to physically scale to the process. The series just doesn’t give much reason to believe these alchemists are able to punch as hard as they create. Albeit there is one exception to this, and that’s the alchemists that use Philosopher’s Stones, aka Hohenheim and Father. Since they don’t rely on the earth's energy and power the Alchemy themselves, they should fully scale to it, and we’ll discuss Greed scaling to them a few sections down.

Despite all the potential debate, ultimately it doesn’t really matter too much. Excluding the outliers of Philosopher's Stone alchemists, the cast would still scale to similar (albeit lower) levels thanks to Ed and Ling surviving Father’s big shockwave. We moreso included this less out of necessity but because we believe it’s an interesting point of debate that the community doesn’t look at too much.

Greed’s Processing Feat

After killing his former minion Bido, Greed suddenly has the memories of his past life in the Devil’s Nest flooded back after they were taken from him by Father, processing all of it in a short timeframe. This feat hasn’t been accepted much by others, but we don’t really see an issue with it. Firstly, it’s very clear that Greed is actually processing the regained memories given how he reacts. He becomes an emotional mess and is extremely broken up by the situation, it’s clear he’s seeing the memories of him and his friends as they flood back, and it’s not like he’s getting unlimited voided and is too stunned to speak, it’s blatant he’s processing to the memories otherwise he wouldn’t be having this type of reaction.

Secondly, and more difficult, is discussing how many memories he actually processed. Both the anime and manga’s interpretation make it somewhat tricky for us to see whether or not Greed is fully taking in every memory at once, as the only memories we see are those with his friends, which come out in sparse fragments. That being said, Greed was still feeling pain for killing his former friend, so he likely was seeing all of the memories they had together, since he wouldn’t have felt that way if he didn’t understand the full scope of his past lives’ friendships. If he only saw the few glimpses we saw in the scene, he likely just wouldn’t care and move on, but it’s clear that didn’t happen. So while we know he saw more than those slight glimpses, we still need to figure out how many memories he actually processed.

Unfortunately we don’t really have a clear answer as to how many he had regained, so we have to do some guess work. Starting off by eliminating options, it’s unlikely he actually regained all 200 years of memories considering the memories he got back are related to his time in the Devil's Nest, which we know couldn’t have been that long. Greed left the Homunculi 100 years ago, so his joining off the Devil’s Nest must’ve been after that, but he could’ve been doing all manner of things in that time, giving us an unclear time frame. However there is a length we can assume thanks to his pal Roa. Roa confirms he was a part of the Ishvalan Civil War and we see this to be true, notably he is not a chimera here, meaning he would’ve met Greed after the war. The Ishvalan Civil War started in 1901 and continued till after 1908 when alchemists were brought into the fight. That gives us a start for the timeframe, and for the end we’ll use the death of Maes Hueghs, who was killed shortly before Ed and Al met Greed in Dublith, in 1914. This gives us around a 5-6 year span of memories where Greed likely knew these guys, and with that, we can do the calculation, meaning that in order for Greed to process that many memories, he’d need to be perceiving at speeds of Mach 5111 to Mach 6182 for 5 and 6 years respectively.

Overall, while the feat itself can seem a bit weird at first glance, we feel as if there’s not a whole lot wrong with using it for Greed’s reactionary and perception speeds, since it’s pretty clear he was able to perceive the memories due to it being shown to us and the emotions he felt afterwards.

Yorozu’s Perfect Sphere

Hey y’all Caden here, considering I’m responsible for this mess in JJK scaling (blame Kenjaku being a bum), the least I can do is explain it. Essentially Yorozu’s cursed technique creates matter from cursed energy, which naturally leads to applying energy to mass conversion for it. Using that formula on her ultimate attack Perfect Sphere gets from 107 gigatons to 2.8 teratons of TNT. This is a massive buff for the verse so naturally people might be skeptical, so I’ll do my best to explain any potential confusion.

Firstly and most importantly, why consider energy to mass conversion for this? As said before construction takes cursed energy and uses it to create mass, seems pretty straightforward for energy to mass conversion. To be clear, cursed energy doesn’t function 1 to 1 with our real life energies, however it’s capable of replicating real life phenomena and is proven by Kenjakus discussion with the White House to be capable of operating as typical energy, meaning it should be fine for this formula. It’s also important to note that construction works differently from other times sorcerers “create” matter. In all other instances of sorcerers creating things, they are either temporary(ex: Shikigami) or made by manipulating already existing material(ex: Uraume’s ice), this includes areas and objects created inside domains as they do not remain after the domain is closed and it’s landscapes are more so symbolic then real. The series goes out of its way to distinguish how construction creates objects and how others do, showing how construction functions differently than other techniques and why we can apply the formula to it but not others.

Secondly we must discuss the actual material created, the calcs linked use 3 different liquid metals, Lithium, Gallium, and Mercury. These metals are all chosen for different reasons, lithium and gallium as explained in the calc are used for being the least dense and most commonly used liquid metals, but I’ll be explaining why mercury would be used and why it’s the most likely option. But first, before we get any further, let's acknowledge the statement of Yorozu “developing” this liquid metal. Being blunt, the notion that Yorozu developed her own element is kind of insane, especially back in the first century. Furthermore, other translations like TCB don’t support the idea of her creating it, and frankly John Werry’s translations can be pretttty wack. Ruling out this possibility, Mercury just makes the most sense as it’s the most common liquid metal in ancient history, dating as far back as 1500 BC and being used many times throughout the world since then, including in Asia. Now obviously this is only an educated guess, we have no way of knowing the exact liquid metal used hence the 3 different ends, but if Yorozu was going to encounter a liquid metal in her time, it was likely Mercury.

All this goes to say that the feat should hold up, it’s definitely not 100% rock solid and will likely continue to be debated, but in the end it won't matter here, as you’ll see in this next segment.

Father and Sukuna Scaling

To wrap up any loose ends before we get to the verdict, let’s now talk about Fullmetal Alchemist and Jujutsu Kaisen’s primary antagonists, Father and Sukuna. While you might be thinking: “well, obviously Greed and Choso don’t scale to the two, they were the ones who killed them!”, and yeah you’re right, after all we included them mostly for completeness sake, however we still felt like they were worth bringing up, as some might make the argument that they could still scale to a select few of their feats through certain showings, which we’ll be addressing in this section. For said section though, I’ll be explaining Father’s side while Caden will explain Sukuna, but we ultimately both agree on the same conclusions for both sides.

Father

When you really look at everything Greed and other comparable characters have done, it's just hard to say he can compare to Father at all. Pretty much all encounters with the two have led to Greed not doing any significant damage to Father aside from when he used his Ultimate Shield to make his skin into a brittle charcoal, but even then that’s through his abilities and not pure strength. Hell, even when Greed did manage to get in a hit on Father, he not only barely reacted, but proceeded to try and absorb his Philosopher’s Stone. Edward and Alphonse also had a lot of trouble even touching Father in their very first encounter, so it’s difficult to say Greed could compare to even a weaker version.

Now an aspect one might point to as to why Greed could somewhat downscale is thanks to Alphonse. During the final few chapters, Alphonse manages to survive a large energy blast from Father, albeit half his torso is gone (now where have I seen that before…) and passes out shortly after. Greed could likely pull off the same thing (and probably come out slightly better with his shield) since he should be comparable to Al, but considering that calculations for this feat are lower than some of Father’s more impressive feats, Alphonse barely survived, and the aforementioned instances of Greed struggling to even hit Father, it’s unfortunately not sufficient enough evidence to support the claim.

The last thing we wanted to mention is the topic of Philosopher’s Stones. A common belief is that every stone is relatively even in power, however the series implies the opposite. One example can be seen when Envy says that the stone Kimblee had at the time wouldn’t be enough to wipe out a town. In fact, we can even compare the sheer gap in power between Greed and Father to similar characters in Pride and Hohenheim; the latter was able to overpower Pride without so much as a gesture, and we know that Hohenheim had over 500,000 souls in reserve. Add that onto the fact that Father has a similar amount of souls that Hohenheim has and that all the Homunculi likely have similar soul counts as well since Greed was able to compete with them, being powered by the same thing isn’t quite enough to justify the two being comparable.

All of this is just a roundabout way of confirming what you probably already assumed. Given that Father has shown to be vastly more powerful than pretty much anyone in the series that isn’t named Hohenheim and the many instances of other characters being unable to reach his level of power, it’s difficult to say that Greed would be able to as well just off of several different instances that have their own caveats.

Sukuna

As for Sukuna, there are a couple potential arguments for Choso scaling to him. He was able to block a few of his slashes, could withstand Fuga for a short time, Sukuna opted to dodge piercing blood at multiple points, the condensed blood he gave Yuji could harm him, and most notably he was able to block a black flash with blood armor. Under normal circumstances, these all would make for pretty blatant scaling, and they do; Choso should be safely downscaling this Sukuna, the problem though is that it’s only this Sukuna.

Throughout Jujutsu High’s battle with the king of curses, they had weakened him considerably time and time again, most people know this but not many understand just how weakened he really is right now. For an easy example, let’s take a look at his short duel with Kusakabe. Now while Kusakabe obviously lost this fight, he did surprisingly well (way better than anyone was expecting of him), as he managed to block all of Sukuna’s slashes except when Sukuna caught his sword, he was able to damage him with his slashes, was keeping up in close combat, and he dodged through Dismantles without even using Simple Domain. Now compare this to back in Shibuya when Kusakabe was so utterly terrified of Sukuna, saying he is an ant while Sukuna is an elephant, and believing he would kill him instantly if he moved whatsoever. You could argue that in Shinjuku he simply overcame his fears and that’s why he was able to face him, but being realistic this is such an insane gap in performance it’d be ridiculous to assume Sukuna is as strong as he was there.

With that we can say this current Sukuna that Choso scales to is at least below 15F Sukuna, which immediately removes all feats/scaling listed in Sukuna’s section as those are all done by a stronger Sukuna then the current, you can immediately see the problem here. The Sukuna that Choso scales to simply shouldn’t be comparable to all the high tier feats you see mentioned.

Or rather, all except one…

Jacob's Ladder Feat

Ironically the only feat in that section you can really argue Choso scaling to is the highest one, I’ll be breaking this section up into two parts, first explaining the feat and why it’s valid, secondly explaining why Choso could scale. Before that though, thanks to Cyber, Rina, and a friend for helping us out with this, we wouldn’t even have this calc without them and Cyber in particular helped out with the explanation, so big props to them, anyways onto said explanation of this wack ass feat.

In the recent chapter 264, Sukuna reacts to an ability called Jabob’s Ladder and punches the ground, sending a wave of debris into the air. The reason this is relevant is that Jacob’s Ladder is a beam of pure light. Jacob’s Ladder is a beam of light shot down from the sky that has intense illumination and burns anyone who touches it. It has no impact force, as it left the rooftop that Sukuna was on when it was first used untouched. When used to free Gojo from the Prison Realm, the technique illuminated with such intensity that spectators had to cover their eyes or use sunglasses (the dust left behind was from the Prison Realm Back disintegrating). It is consistently referred to as light and is intense enough to burn Sukuna and Yuji.  All of this is to show that Jacob’s ladder meets the requirements to be a legitimate beam of light and thus move at the speed of light. Now, as mentioned before, Sukuna was able to punch a wave of debris upwards before the beam hits him in order to reach Hana high up in the air. Taking into account the speed of the debris would be moving in tandem with the light, the kinetic energy of it would be quite impressive. “But wait!” I hear you say in the metaphorical audience, “Didn’t we see Jacobs Ladder hit the ground in the last page of 263? Why are we saying Sukuna did this before it hit?” and the answer to that my friend is simply cinematic timing. 263 ends with us seeing the light hit the ground, but the start of 264 takes us a few seconds back to it before firing, and we can prove it. In the shot of the debris going upwards, we see a large heavy shadow under a steel beam, telling us there is a strong light source coming from above. A shadow like this wouldn’t exist if there was a light source coming from the side and it’s a way of showing us Jacobs Ladder is coming down. This is also blatantly shown in the background itself, every time Sukuna is inside Jacobs Ladder it’s just white(aside from speed lines and debris), this isn’t the case in the panels of Sukuna punching the rubble up, supporting again that the light hadn’t hit yet. The final support for it not hitting yet is the paneling itself, reading the panels in the order you’re supposed to, we see Jacobs Ladder hit on the final panel of the page, and that’s also when we see it’s sound effect appear, showing yet again that the light hit after Sukuna punched the debris up. All this is to say the feat and the calculations make sense, but that still leaves the question of how Choso scales.

Thankfully that question is wayyyy easier to explain. Simply put, Sukuna in this chapter is probably the weakest he’s been in this entire fight, the only other time that really compares is after Gojo nearly killed him. Thanks to Yuji’s consistent attacks on his soul in 257 and 263, Sukuna’s control over his body has plummeted to the point he was coughing up fingers, not to mention he can’t even use his CT right now and only just got his RCT back after the feat. It should be pretty safe to say that this Sukuna is weaker than the one Choso is able to downscale from a couple chapters ago for the reasons listed in the section before.

Verdict

Stats

Putting a concrete number or level on these two in terms of their stats is easier said than done than you might think. For Greed, he should naturally scale to a variety of different feats performed throughout Fullmetal Alchemist due to having fought the likes of Edward, Wrath and Pride. While not quite 1-to-1 with his own Alchemy, Edward himself was still fast enough to dodge bullets and survive an explosion from Kimblee’s Destruction Alchemy who, with a weaker Philosopher’s Stone, could level an entire town in Ishval. Additionally, other Homunculi like Wrath are able to blitz soldiers faster than they could even react, and Pride’s tendrils, who Greed and other characters have reacted to, can travel across Amestris in a relatively short amount of time. However, Greed isn’t without his fair share of feats himself, the most impressive ones being surviving the shockwaves of Father’s cloud split which would land him around the low megaton range, and processing his past life in a short timeframe, which as we’ve established earlier would put him well-within the Massively Hypersonic+ speeds.

Moving onto Choso, similar to his opponent, he’s seen quite a bit of action against the likes of Yuji, Naoya and Kenjaku. Even on his own, Choso can fire off Piercing Blood, which moves at the speed of sound and can tear through metal walls, and can use his blood manipulation to lift up a giant pillar of ground. But of course, his best feats come from scaling to his fellow Curses and sorcerers, like Yuji, who can use Black Flash, a move requiring him to apply Cursed Energy in microseconds. And as we’ve established before, Choso at least by the the events of the final arc should be comparable to Jogo, who has feats that get him within the Large Town ranges and even higher if you decide to use Maximum Meteor statements. Choso has also shown to be able to hold his own against Kenjaku, who could survive the initial effects of Yuki’s Black Hole, which would mean he could survive over 600 megatons of TNT. Again, we aren’t saying that Choso could do exactly the same thing, but given that he’s able to take hits from and damage Kenjaku, and the fact that he got stronger by Shinjuku shows that he should be around his father’s level.

Overall, we have a clear difference for the two in terms of power and speed, with Choso and Greed taking them respectively. While not necessarily indicative of travel speed, Greed’s reactionary and perception speeds exceed that of even Black Flash, but Choso being able to scale to characters like Kenjaku puts him far ahead in terms of power compared to what Greed can scale to. This gap is widened even further if we scale Choso to the Jacob’s Ladder feat, even allowing him to take speed as he’d be downscaling relativistic speeds. However we aren’t going to lean on this argument too hard; while we believe he should scale to it, the feats won’t be necessary towards our verdict.

Arsenal & Abilities

When you look at these two’s abilities, you can come to an easy conclusion in one aspect: Greed works better in shorter ranges, while Choso excels in long range. With little-to-no ranged options himself, Greed is ultimately gonna have a hard time getting up close to his opponent due to Choso’s wide variety of different blood-based techniques, like keeping him on his toes with Piercing Blood or setting up Supernovas to use later. Though that’s not to say Greed can’t do anything; with the use of Ling, Greed could keep track of Choso with Dragon’s Pulse, and even use some of his explosives like his smoke grenade or flash bang to throw Choso off. While these options pale in comparison to Choso’s wide variety of long-range options like Slicing Exorcism and the aforementioned Piercing Blood, it is something Greed could use to his advantage. Plus, the idea of Greed being able to close the distance isn’t a foreign idea, given that Yuji was able to do the same in his fight with Choso.

With that, Greed could likely get close and begin to overwhelm Choso and do quite well, given his run-ins with the likes of Bradley and Edward, two military-trained fighters. Choso does have quite a bit of expertise in hand-to-hand, but the people he’s fought don’t quite stack up to the people Greed’s fought in terms of skill and experience. Still, the fact that Choso can fight at close ranges means that he won’t be completely helpless if Greed does manage to get in close, and has plenty of options for both offense and defense similar to Greed, like his blood-hardening and weapons creation.

Another topic to discuss when it comes to their abilities is their healing factors, and in this case, Greed has the leg up, though with an important caveat. While Reverse Cursed Technique is impressive and has helped Choso recover from some serious injuries, the Homunculi’s regenerative abilities have shown to be far more impressive. Greed himself could regenerate from having his head nearly completely destroyed, and other Homunculi like Gluttony and Lust have come back from large portions of their bodies being blown to bits. Even if Choso went for the killshot immediately like he did with Yuji, Greed would easily be able to heal himself good as new, meaning that while Greed isn’t quite as good in longer range combat, he could likely barrel through most of Choso’s offensive options… but if it were only that easy.

See, while Greed’s regeneration is extremely useful, it also isn’t perfect; the Homunculi’s regeneration can be negated upon destroying the Philosopher’s Stone. Lust and Envy have shown that they are physically inside their bodies, meaning Greed would have it within his as well, so Choso could likely figure out that the stone is the key to his healing factor over time, given his tactical smarts. We’ll touch on that aspect in Tertiary Factors here in a bit, but the point is that Greed does have a weak spot for Choso to exploit, so even though he could cope with Choso’s wide range of abilities, it’s not going to last forever once the Death Painting figures out the key to his regeneration.

Overall, it’s clear that these two have their pros and cons when it comes to their respective specializations, and both do have ways to keep the fight at a specific range. However, given Greed’s exploitable healing factor and the initial struggle he’s going to have even getting close to Choso, Choso should take the overall ability aspect of this fight with his superior techniques and ability to negate his opponent’s superior healing factor.

Tertiary Factors

When analyzing these two’s overall experience, Greed should take it. He’s older than Choso by 50 years, and as we’ve mentioned previously, has seen his own fair share of fights against some of the toughest and most skilled opponents in Fullmetal Alchemist, like King Bradley and Edward Elric. The former of the two was a highly skilled and experienced soldier who’s skill outshined even those who did nothing but combat training for 60 years, and the same man even noted how proficient he was in fighting. While Choso himself has taken on some skilled fighters, he himself has even admitted to not having much direct combat experience.

Tactics is an interesting topic to tackle, as both have shown to be well-versed in the subject, able to find an opponent’s weakness and use it against them, examples including Ling exploiting Bradley’s blind spot and Choso exploiting Kenjaku’s tunnel vision. As such, it’s likely both could weed out their opponent’s respective weaknesses, like Choso’s over-reliance on long-range abilities or Greed’s inability to use his shield and regeneration at the same time. However, Greed has a more important weakness that Choso can exploit, while Choso himself doesn’t really have as detrimental of a weakness as Greed.

As stated previously, Philosopher’s Stones are physically inside of the Homunculi, and with enough trial and error, Choso could reasonably figure out that the stone is what helps Greed regenerate and destroy it. This would not be outlandish, as Roy Mustang was able to deduce the same thing when he encountered Lust. While Greed would likely be smart enough to hide this as best he can, it’s a weakness that would eventually come out, given that Choso can fight for quite a long time and generally keep a level head even in high-tension situations.

Ultimately, while Greed does have the edge in overall experience and skill, Choso could more than make up for it by figuring out Greed’s biggest weakness, as well as not having ones that would mean certain death unlike his opponent.

Conclusion/Overall

Greed

"They gave me everything I could want. Thank you… and goodbye, my friends."

Advantages:

  • Faster if Jacob’s Ladder isn’t used…

  • More experienced and skilled

  • Better regeneration…

  • Show has the better openings don’t @ me

  • Best boy

Disadvantages:

  • …but slower if you do use it

  • Weaker no matter what

  • Way less versatile

  • Outranged

  • …but said regeneration can be negated

  • 200 years old and only has like 5 friends

Choso

"Thank you, Yuji. For becoming my little brother."

Advantages:

  • Stronger

  • Sweeps in all stats if Jacob's Ladder feats are used

  • Far more versatile

  • Significantly outranges

  • Could likely figure out Greed’s weak point

  • Also best boy (and best brother)

Disadvantages:

  • Slower if Jacob’s Ladder isn’t used

  • Far worse showings of regeneration

  • Less experience and skill

  • Didn’t even take a chapter to be replaced as Yuji’s brother. Wtf Gege?

If you had a presumption about how strong these two were beforehand, then you might be surprised to learn that this discussion was more complex than meets the eye. Using their more reliable low-ends, Greed would be outspeeding by a decent bit with his processing feat (which we personally find to be fine to use for low ends, though feel free to come to your own conclusion), while Choso would outmuscle thanks to his scaling to the likes of the Disaster Curses and Kenjaku, this gap being extremely widened if the high end scaling of Jacob's Ladder is used.

While Greed could find a way around this thanks to his own tactics and various grenades, thanks to Choso’s variety of abilities, he would more-often-than-not be able to keep Greed at bay with his long-range attacks, and his tactical prowess would allow him to figure out the key to the Homunculus’ healing factor in spite of his inferior fighting ability and overall combat experience. And even if Greed were able to get close, it wouldn’t be the end of the world for Choso, as he could hold his own and use different defensive techniques to protect himself.

In the end, while the deserted Homunculus would put up a good fight for the Death Painting and could likely catch him off guard, Choso’s superior strength and abilities will ultimately be too much for Greed to handle, and an exploitable healing factor is only the final nail in his coffin. Unfortunately for him, Greedling’s efforts couldn’t shield victory, as Yuji’s big brother was able to paint a picture of his win.

The winner is Choso.

Special Thanks/Next Time

Phew, finally. I did not expect this blog to take as much time as it did, but I’m still incredibly happy with how it came out, and that’s mainly due to both CadenDaMonkay and Cabbage for helping me out with proofreading, getting extra info and of course the awesome art. I really don’t think I would’ve been able to make this as good without their help, so shout out to you both. And of course, thank you all for reading, I know the rollout has been a bit inconsistent, but I just wanna make sure these things are the absolute best they can be.

Now how about that next time?
